Moon Craters

Have you ever wondered about the moon?
Wondered why it seems to change shape?
Wondered what the moon surface is like?

B4 have been finding out about the moon.
This week we talked about the craters on the moon.
We did an experiment to find out how the different-sized craters may have formed.
We used a tray of flour as the moon's surface, and dropped a variety of balls onto it.

We were surprised when the little marble went in deeper than the big ball!
Why might that have happened?

Can you see the patterns left in the flour by the softball?

Do you have an interesting fact about the moon to share with us?
Do you have a question about the moon?

  1. Dear B4,

What an interesting way to explore the craters of the moon! Why did the marble go so deep?

I love the moon! Do you know what a blue moon is? You might be thinking color, but it does not mean the satellite turns blue. Occasionally, we will get TWO full moons in one month. When that happens, the second full moon is called a blue moon.

Would anyone want to travel to the moon?

Yesterday was our last day of school. We begin again on August 19. Summer starts this month in the northern hemisphere, and I am looking forward to all the warm weather. What season is it where you live? (Hey, does the moon have seasons?)

I know what the blue moon is - it is when there is two full moons in the same month. Well, that is what happened in New Zealand, so I do know! I told mum about it. She was shocked.
It is my sister's birthday, she will be two.

    1. @ Henare,

Thank you for responding. Please tell your classmates that I appreciate that they commented back to me!

You asked if I knew that the moon was made of rock. Yes, i knew that. I also knew that we get hit by meteorites here on earth. In fact, I went to an impact site a few years ago.

It is called Meteor Crater and it is in the state of Arizona. I think they said it impacted 50,000 years ago!

Thank you for your follow up questions!

      Warmly,
      Mrs. Y♥llis

      Thank you for your reply!

You asked if I would go to the moon. No, I would not go to the moon. First of all, it is too far away and I like to sleep in my own bed at night. Second, I like the atmosphere around our planet.

The marble went deep because it is smaller and heavier
than the other balls, that is what I think.
What is it like in Amnerica?
(and you have a nice name)

    1. @ Jade,

Thank you for answering my question about why the marble went so deep. The size and the weight were the explanations. Thank you!

You asked what it is like in America. American is a lovely country with a population of about 327,000,000 people. That is a lot! We are about the same size as Australia. There are lots of things to do here like visit national parks, experience amusements parks, and hike.

What is is like in New Zealand?

Thank you for saying I have a nice name!
