Flat Rosie's Visit

Flat Rosie is here for a week from Sydney, Australia.

She comes from the Year 2 class at Roseville College.
We were surprised to find out that all of the children at that school are girls!
Flat Rosie is traveling the world and even has her own blog.
The girls in 2T sent some wonderings for us to answer:

Now it is time for Flat Rosie to go home, as our
two-week term break starts.

Read about our previous flat person project here.

Have you read the story of Flat Stanley or done a flat person project?

Our flat selves are home from Australia

We were excited on Friday when the parcel arrived with our flat selves, back from
visiting 2KM and 2KJ in Australia.
It was fun reading our diaries and finding out
what we had done.
The diaries will be a great keepsake, and the project has been an exciting part of our learning this term.
Writing the diaries for our visitors from Australia gave a real purpose to our writing.

B4 children, please comment - what did you do in Australia?

Our Flat Stanley diaries

Our Flat Stanley project with 2KM and 2KJ is nearing an end.
Tomorrow we are making the final entries in the diaries and then the Australian
flat people will fly off home.
They have had a busy time while they were here.
We took them for a walk around town and took lots of photos.

Our flat friends came to the lunchtime disco last week,
they took part in athletics day and
they spent some time at our homes.
Some have been swimming, milking cows and horse-riding.

Take a sneak peek at our diaries!

Athletics Day

This year, instead of  separate senior and junior sports,
we had a whole school athletics day, with both competitive and fun events.
The day started with a house relay,
with 3 children from each year group running for their house.

Then we moved to the rotations in year groups,
taking part (with adaptations for the younger children)
in sprints, high jump, long jump,
javelin/vortex, shot put/softball throw, discus/gumboot throw,
with an obstacle course, sack races, three-legged races
and water slide for fun.

Luckily the Flat Stanleys from 2KM and 2KJ in Australia arrived yesterday,
so they were able to take part too!

What is your favourite athletics event?

Our Flat Stanley project

During the summer holidays B4 and B3 were invited to join a Flat Stanley project by
Miss Jordan and Mrs Morris from 2KM and 2KJ in Australia.

We were excited to join as late last year
we had read 'Flat Stanley' which was written by Jeff Brown in 1964.
Stanley Lambchop is a boy who was flattened, but not hurt, by his bulletin board one night.
Stanley then has a lot of fun adventures.

We kicked off the project by skyping with 2KM and 2KJ two weeks ago.
Last week all of the students made their own Flat Stanleys, which they have named after themselves, and have written an introduction about themselves.
We shared our Flat Stanleys at assembly on Friday.
The Flat Stanleys are now in the mail to Australia and 2KM/2KJ's are on the way to us.
We will look after them for a week and keep diaries
about the adventures they have, before the Flat Stanleys return home.

Have you ever looked after a Flat Stanley?
What adventures did you have together?

Skyping about 'Flat Stanley' with 2KM and 2KJ

B4 and B3 had a great Skype session with 2KM and 2KJ in Australia.
We have all been
reading 'Flat Stanley', and we asked each other
some questions about the story.
It was a good chance to try some of our inference and recall skills.
Lots of children liked the chapter about Stanley helping to catch
the sneak thieves in the Museum.

We also got to ask some questions to compare our schools.
We have 9 Year 2s, but in their school there are 100 Grade 2s!
2KM and 2KJ each have 21 students.
B4 and B3 each have 18 students.
Children at both schools have art, music and PE.
They learn Indonesian and we learn Maori, so we showed each other how we count to 10.

At the end of the call the children decided that it would be fun if they make Flat Stanleys and send them for holidays in New Zealand or Australia.

Watch out in a couple of weeks to read about the adventures of the Flat Stanleys.

Have you ever read 'Flat Stanley'?
What was your favourite chapter?

Thanks to the student teacher in 2KM/2KJ for this transcript of the session:
