Back Up and Re-read

This is the final of our daily 5 strategy songs for now.
The third strategy we are sharing is to back up and reread if the story stops making sense.

Good readers often use more than one strategy at a time,
for instance if we
check for understanding
and realise the story doesn't make sense then
we can back up and reread and
we might even need to
cross-check
some of the words we read!
The 'Back Up and Re-read' Song:
(Tune: B-I-N-G-O)
I read a bit and now I've found
I really just don't get it.
Now what should I do?
Now what should I do?
Now what should I do?

I'll back up and re-read it!

Have you ever had to use two strategies together when you were reading?
What were they?

  1. Hello,
I loved listening to your "Backup and re-read it" song. I think it is a good idea to have a song like this for your Daily 5 learning.
I think I do use two strategies at the same time when I am reading. Sometimes, I say to myself, "Okay, you must be daydreaming. Stop and pay attention. Is this making sense to you?" I might need to find a better place to read where I can focus. Back up and re-read it is a good strategy, because I know where things started getting confusing and I just go back and start again. I sometimes have to make sure I have a sticky note to remind myself about tricky words that I'm not too sure about.
    Keep enjoying reading.
    Sincerely,
    Ms Clayton

    1. Dear Ms Clayton
Thanks for your comment and for sharing the strategies that you use. We really like the back-up and re-read strategy too. Sticky notes are a good idea. We will need to try that too.

  2. Dear Mrs. McKenzie's class,

We liked how you helped us remember to back up and reread. We think this is a very important strategy. Setting your words to music will help us remember.

This reminds us of a time when we had to use this strategy. We actually listened to your song then we backed up to reread the lyrics and we listened again. Our class had fun singing with you. We have also looked at the pictures to give us clues about the words. Checking for understanding is something we try to do all the time.

Thank you for sharing your terrific song with us!

This reminds us of a time when we had to use this strategy, too. Many students in our class could recall times just this week when we used it. Today, we actually listened to your song then we backed up to reread the lyrics and we listened again. Our class had fun singing with you. We have also looked at the pictures to give us clues about the words. Checking for understanding is something we try to do all the time.
