What's the Temperature Where You Live?

In maths this week, we are looking at temperature.

Here in New Zealand, it is spring.
The days are getting warmer.
But would a person living somewhere else call our weather warm, or would it seem cold in comparison to where they live?

We are hoping that visitors to our blog this week (and next) will comment on what the temperature is where they live.

Let us know:
Where you are
What time of day it is
What the temperature is (please show C or F)
Do you think your day seems hot, warm, cool or cold?

Hint: To write the degrees symbol ˚ using your computer, hold the Option and K buttons together.
If you are using an ipad, hold down on the zero key to make the symbol.

Here is a handy tool for converting ˚F to ˚Celsuis

It is 11:21 a.m.on 10/13/14 and the temperature is 75 F. The predicted high is 85 F. The low this morning was 64 F. I love the weather this time of year. We are entering our fall season. This is usually a time of comfortable weather for south Texas.

The temperature here this morning is 14.9˚C. In the afternoon it is meant to be hot.
Yesterday we went to the weather station.
It must have been exhausting in Nelson, because the temperature was 26˚C and I think that is hot.

  8. Dear Mrs. McKenzie and class,

I am a third grade teacher in southern California. If you look at a map, you will see that I live in the northern hemisphere. Because we live in opposite hemispheres, our seasons are opposite. Here in the northern hemisphere, it is fall.

You asked about our weather. We just had a big heat wave and the temperatures were in the high 90˚ F (more than 32˚C). We even had to stay indoors for lunch one day because it was so hot! However, the temperatures are now dropping. Today it was 75˚F (around 24˚ C).

It is 9:10 P.M. here on Tuesday, and I just looked at the time in New Zealand. It is 5:10 P.M. on Wednesday. How many hours ahead are you from us?

    Your blogging buddy,

    5. @ Ben,

Thank you for commenting back to me! 20˚ C is equivalent to 68˚F which is a very comfortable, yet a little bit cool. It is 18˚C / 64˚F right now in Los Angeles, California, and the it around 8:00 P.M. on Wenesday.

      @ Flynn,

Thank you for calculating the hours ahead. Yes, you are 20 hours ahead of us. I am going to go to bed in two hours and I will wake up on Thursday. We have Daylight Saving Time. Do you?

      De☆r Lily ♥ ♥ ♥,

Thank you for the response! I like how you are making symbols using HTML code. Well done! It is cool here too. What season do you like the best and why?

      @ Jamie,

Thank you for a fabulous reply. What do you mean you have a pretend thermometer? How are you measuring the air temperature if you do not have a real thermometer?

    6. @ B4,

I am about ready to leave for work on Thursday morning. It is about 7:00 A.M. here. The sun has already risen, and the forecast for today is a high of 22˚ C (72˚ F) That is typical weather for southern California.

I can hear the garbage truck out in the street. The truck has a big hydraulic arm that picks up the can, dumps the trash, and returns the can to the ground. When I hear that sound, I know it must be Thursday!

What do you notice about your day, which will start in a few hours! I believe it is already Friday where you are! What are some special sounds and sights on a Friday?

It is a quarter passed 7 here in California. I'm glad that the sun is coming out more often for you. We have had some beautiful days here. However, it has been quite foggy in the morning.

      @ Blake,

It sounds like it was a very lively Friday! You can't say all of the seasons are your favorite! :-) You must choose one. Think about it and let me know what you decide!

      @ Lily ♥ ♥ ♥,

I love summer most of all because the weather is warm and I can go to the beach or our lake cottage in Minnesota. Being outside in the warm sunshine or swimming make summer my favorite.

      @ Flynn,

From your clues, I can tell that winter in not your favorite season. I think our daylight saving is going to stop at the beginning of November.

      @ Charlee,

I like summer because my birthday is in the summer like you. However, summer here is June, July, August. When is summer in your hemisphere?

At lunch I am making a picture of a thermometer. It will have lots of numbers on it.
Our pretend thermometers are made of paper. We wrote cold, cool, warm and hot on them and if we want to describe how the weather feels we move the paper clip up or down!
We know the proper temperature from the weather station. We look at it on our computer and whiteboard.

I like the idea of a paper temperature. It is funny how the word cool has multiple meanings. Here in American you can say the weather is cool OR you can say your shirt looks cool. Do you have those two meanings?
