Iconic Kiwi Foods

The classes have been posting about food this week on the Our World, Our Stories blog.
That got us thinking about some iconic kiwi foods, the foods that make us think of New Zealand.
Here are some that we came up with:

Pineapple Lumps and Crunchie bars

Lemon and Paeroa (L&P)

Kiwifruit

Manuka honey

Roast lamb and Mint Sauce chips (crisps)

Where was pavlova created - Australia or New Zealand?

Can you think of some more 'kiwi' foods?
What  foods from around the world are regarded as iconic?

  1. Dear B4,

How fun to see what you like to eat in New Zealand.

I have never seen those potato chips and I don't think I want to try them! I prefer salt and vinegar or plain chips. Do you call them crisps?

I didn't know Crunchie was from NZ. We love Crunchies here too. As for Pineapple Lumps, you can buy them here but they're not overly popular.

Many students like to bring kiwi fruit for snack. I wonder if our other blogging buddies can buy kiwi fruit where they live?

PS - how yummy is pavlova! I think I know the answer to your question but I will let someone else answer it.

  2. Hello B4,

I've had all of the pictured foods except Pineapple lumps and roast lamb and mint chips but I'd be willing to try.

L&P (Lemon & Paeroa)was always a favourite drink when I was in NZ. I've even sometimes seen it available in Australia.

One of my real favourites from NZ that isn't pictured is the Whittaker's Original Peanut Slab. That one we can get here in Australia and I often do. :)

Being so close together, it isn't surprising we would have a number of similar foods. :)

  3. Dear B4,

I have never heard of any of those iconic foods except the kiwi! Kiwis can be purchased here in America, but they are not very popular. I think they are super delicious and beautiful, too! When you cut one open, you see that gorgeous green color with a starburst of seeds! I love them!

Potato chips are very popular in the United States. However, we don't flavor them like I've saw in the Australian and New Zealand Our World, Our Stories food post. I saw there was chicken flavor and lamb flavored chips and so forth. Our chips are BBQ, ranch, or a cheese of some kind, like cheddar flavored. Meat flavoring is not used here to my knowledge. Interesting!

Doritos and Cheetos are popular chips. However, your fingers always end up orange or yellow after eating them!

    Thanks for a fun post!

  5. Dear B4
As an ex-Kiwi, living in Melbourne (and now an Australian) I would like to add Hokey Pokey Ice-cream. We can get it here now, but I think it was originally a NZ creation?

I also remember 'animal biscuits' - simple animal shaped biscuits with icing on one side. Do they still make them ??

I recently took my daughters to NZ and they loved L&P (I do too!)

  6. Dear B4,

We love the idea of sharing foods that are special to our area. We have not heard of any of the foods you listed, except for the kiwi fruit. That is sold here in our stores and we think it's delicious!

Our class hasn't thought too much about what foods are unique to the United States. Michigan does grow a lot of cherries and apples. There are some foods that are made here in Michigan. We have Faygo pop that is made here and so are Better-Made potato chips. Vernors is another beverage that is unique to our area. It is a ginger-flavored pop. Outside of Michigan, not too many people know what that is.

Thank you for this fun post!

  7. Dear B4,

Our names are Jakob and Ellie. We both think that the crisps, Pineapple lumps sound good.

Here are some typical American foods: apple pie, goldfish crackers, and hamburgers.

Have you ever eaten any of these foods? Are they popular in New Zealand too?

    Sincerely,
    Ellie and Jakob

  8. For me the list is missing: Jaffas, Chocolate Fish and Buzz Bars, particularly frozen. All things (including pineapple lumps) that I purchase when visiting New Zealand (and occasionally can find on visit to Oz.). I would have called the kiwi fruit ...chinese gooseberries. Yummy. Thanks.
