Toys: Past, Present and Future

Within our big idea 'Look Back to Look Forward',
this term's Social Studies topic is 'Toys: Past, Present and Future'.

One of Mrs McKenzie's favourite toys when she was growing up in the 1960s were her little china tea-sets.
One of them had also been played with by her mother as a child!

Mr McKenzie loved playing with his truck.

Tell us about your favourite toy when you were aged
about 5-8 years old.
Which decade was that in?
 2000- now,
1990-1999,
1980-1989,
1970-1979,
1960-1969,
1950-1959,
1940-1949,
1930-1939
or even earlier?

What do you think children will play with in the future?

My favourite toy is a doll. I am 6. It doesn't matter what toy you play with because it is just a toy. I play with my car and doll every day after school and cars are cool because you can bounce on the bed with them, but if you step on them they really hurt and they are cool because you can speed them around the house.

  2. Dear B4,
Firstly thank you for sharing this and letting me walk down memory land. My decade is 1960-69. My absolute favourite toy was my matching china teaset in a gorgeous blue box. I used to make tea parties for my dolls outside almost everyday. One of my saddest days as a child was when I tripped and fell down the steps carrying the box. There were so many breakages. My mum and dad tried to glue them back together but they were never quite the same. Can you believe I still have them somewhere in the basement. My own children spent hours playing with them too. My absolute favourite piece was the teeny tiny lid on the milk jug. I wish I could find them to take a photo and post it on here for you... I will try.
I think in the future children will play more and more with online games.
Thanks again for allowing this sharing.

    2. Thank you for replying. I have searched and searched but can't find my teaset. I know I have it somewhere. I loved the little pictures on mine. They were so white with a little girl on them.
I am very sad to hear your plate broke. I hope you weren't too grumpy with your brother.
Now you've hot me thinking about another favorite thing I used to spend hours and hours with - my dress up dolls! They were cardboard and had lots of changes of clothes that you folded little tabs to hold them on! Do you know what I mean? What a wonderful learning journey you are all having!

  3. Back in the 1970's, I had a doll called Action Girl. I never owned a Barbie Doll but Action Girl was the competition. Action Girl had bendable joints and big feet like Action Man... My Action Girl had black hair and a fringe so she was very different to the Barbie doll that ALL my friends owned at the time!

  5. Hi B4!
My favourite toys to play with were my nana's indoor bowling set that we used to play down her very long hallway! I also loved my care bear and glow worm. This was in the years 1980-1989!

What a great idea to be investigating!

  6. My favourite toy when I was 4 (the 1960's) was a Dinky Toys Thunderbird 2 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbirds_machines#Thunderbird_2] with a pop-out carrier pod.
By 1970 it was a Captain Scarlet Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle [http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectrum_Pursuit_Vehicle]. I don't have either of them anymore, unfortunately.
In the future I think Lego will continue to be a popular toy, although wider use of 3D-print could see toys becoming customised for each child 'on demand'.

  7. My favourite toy in the 80's was my Daffy Doll - she looked like this - http://www.butterflyrocket.com/BR_IMAGES/HollyHobbie_June06.jpg

She was a Holly Hobbie doll but I called her Daffy. I still have her today but she looks a little bit tatty now and my mum had to sew a new face on to her when I was about 10.

My second favourite doll was Stringy - she was a doll that was the same size as me when I was 5 - my mum sewed her and I could attach her arms and legs to me and dance around the room with her.

When i was that age it was 1980. Barbies and Cindy dolls where the coolest things around. I had the barbie dream time bed and barbie dream furniture and about 4 barbies and 1 cindy. My fav teddy was a baby smurf that had a hard face and soft body i still have it to this day. Although my kids have some what made him even more worn.

During the 1980's my favourite toy was a 'Cabbage Patch Kid' doll called Archibald. I took him everywhere with me. He had his own birth certificate & hospital ID bracelet and I had a cot, highchair & bassinet for him as well.
I also had a lot of Barbie dolls.

  12. My twin sister and I were 5 in 1954. Our favourite toy was a pair of rollerskates each. We taught ourselves to do artistic swirls, skate backwards and also speed skate. We had a lot of concrete and a lot of friends would come to skate too. Our favourite game was to pull a few friends along with a rope as fast as we could and I remember the mixture of fear and joyous excitement. We skated for many years and I have never forgotten the happiness we got from our wheels.

In the late 1970's my favourite toy was a little aeroplane on a long piece of string that you swung round & round your head. When you did that the propeller would spin & make it sound like a real plane.

I have a stuffed pig. His name is Daisy. His eyes are on his bum. The colour is brown and white. When you click a butten he picks his nose. Nana says yuk when he does that. It is funny. I snuggle into bed with him but his eyes fall off, so I have to sew them back on.

My favorite toy to play with when I was 5 years old was my Barbie doll. She had a very racy looking red convertible car that I loved too. All the doors on the car could be opened and it even had a working horn, lights and radio! My barbie had long hair that i liked to braid and adjustable limbs so you could sit her down. I never had a doll house but I made my own out of cardboard boxes and would make furniture and clothes out of old material, paper and cardboard.

  17. Hi B4!

My favourite toys when I was in primary school was my collection of Ferrari Matchbox cars. I took great pride in them and took special care not to scratch them or get them dirty. I still had the cars when I was an adult (my mum found them tucked away!) so I passed them onto Joshua and they are still in great condition!
I also loved playing with Lego, my brother and I used to pour buckets of Lego on the lounge floor and play for hours.

  19. Hi B4

My favourite toys when I was growing up in the 1950 were dinky toys - I used to play with my brother making roads and bridges for the cars to run around on in the sandpit. I also had a lovely doll called Sally - she had long blond hair that I used to comb and tie up in pigtails - she was a porccelain and her eyes would close when you laid her down. I also loved my roller skates - we used to skate in the old Primary School ground. I fell off them when I was about 6 years old and broke my are so I was really careful after that.
