Family Challenge

The annual family challenge was held at school last night. Many of the fun challenges were based around the theme of 'Shake, Rattle and Roll'.
Among them were: deciding on items for an emergency kit; rank important NZ earthquakes in order of magnitude; and answering 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?' type questions about earthquakes.
Watch out for these other challenges in the video: make a bird mask and use it in the birdie dance; get two team members across the floor staying on two small pieces of paper; make a little cart that can carry 3 marshmallows up and over a ramp; and bird mask hockey.
Thanks Mr Wright for organising another great family challenge!

Were you at the family challenge?
What was your favourite game?

Hope to see you there next year!

  1. Firstly I was not at the family challenge because I live in Hamilton, but I have to say this what a GREAT idea and I certainly wish that I was there. I only needed to see the faces of the students, parents and family enjoying themselves to tell myself how successful that it was. I think that there are many people who really enjoyed themselves. I also think it was great that you were focusing on things to do with an Earthquake that were practical for yourself and your students. I continue to be very, very impressed with your online work.

  2. Dear B4,

What a fun night you had! I have never seen a Family Challenge Night before and like Mr Webb said, it is a great idea!

The Grade One students at our school sometimes have a Family Maths Night where the students bring their parents for lots of fun maths activities.

Last night we had our Grade Two Activity Night but there were no parents there. It was a lot of fun!

Everyone looked very happy in your pictures.

Was there a prize for the winners?
How long did the night go for?

  3. Dear B4,

    What a fun night!

You mentioned that a game was rank important NZ earthquakes in order of magnitude. I'm curious, what were some the magnitudes and when did they occur. Also, how often do you get earthquakes?

Dear Mr Webb and Miss McGeady
Reefton Area School have been running our family challenge nights for a number of years now. We usually run it in the winter term, as the dairy farming families are not so busy then and are able to come.
Although we are usually a health promoting school, this is a special occasion so we do put out plates of lollies for each team, and the prizes are chocolate!
We often get our older students looking after teams of younger students, so it helps to promote leadership within the school.
    And it is FUN!

    Dear Mrs Yollis
I love the musical notes in your comment.
I'm hoping that my first try at making an html link works. I am following your instructions, so fingers crossed.
In 1968 there was a 7.1 earthquake at Inangahua, a small village 20 minutes from here. At the time I was a 9 year old in Nelson, 2 and 1/2 hours drive away, but I remember being woken in the night.
The other major quake in this area was in Murchison in 1929, and at magnitude 7.8 caused a lot of change to landforms. It was centered an hours drive from here.

We are still thinking about quake-safe here because the people in Christchurch are still experiencing many aftershocks. Life for most people there has returned to normal though.

I know that at the judges table we ate some of the spare marshmallows. They were yummy.

  10. Dear Mrs. McKenzie and B4,

Family Challenge night sounds like so much fun! I loved seeing all the different activities in your slide show.

I am sure the students in our school would love to have a Family Challenge night too. Two years ago we had a family math night...maybe it is time to try something new :)
