A Slice of Kiwiana: Pets' Day 2012

One of the best things about being a rural school is that we continue with Kiwi traditions such as Pet's Day.
Along with pets, the children also exhibit
models, sand gardens, art works, pet rocks, photographs,
decorated bikes and baking.
We hope you enjoy this slice of kiwiana.

The Grand Parade and more:

What special events does your school have?

  1. The slides and video are fabulous! What fun! Are the cakes decorated at home?
Our school has a two large "thrift shops" a year that are organized by the PTA to raise money. The high school students bake and cook food to sell. The elementary school have a Christmas and Spring program. Elementary school also has a sports day in May. DIfferent classes have different events. A pet day would be rather difficult since many of our students come by train and many don't have pets. I would like to see if we could have a favorite storybook character day sometime this year. I can't wait to show my class what your school does.

  2. Dear Mrs McKenzie and B4,

    What a great post!

I am Sophie and I am in 4KJ in Australia. I am a student blogger and my blog address is: http://sophiebblog.global2.vic.edu.au

I think your Pet's Day sounds very interesting. I loved the decorated bikes! Yes, I did see the teacher dressed as Mary Poppins!

On Pet's Day do you take your pets to school?

A special event our school has is LPS Day. LPS Day is when you dress up as something begining with the letter l, p or s. The letters are l, p and s because our school in called Leopold Primary School.

      Hi i am Aleigha.
if I was at your school I would dress up as a princess.
What do you dress up as for school?
if you had w i would dress up as a witch,
or if there was z i would dress up as a zoo or a zebra.
What would you like to dress up as out of z/w?
At pet's day we can spin the chocolate wheel and some other things.

      Warm wishes Aleigha

  3. Dear Mrs McKenzie and B4,

Hello! My name is Liv and I am in 4KJ, Miss Jordan's class this year. This is the second time I have had Miss Jordan so I am very lucky. I also have my own blog. http://livsblog.global2.vic.edu.au/

Wow, what an entertaining post this was! I was interested to hear about your Pet's Day.

I really enjoyed watching the videos, I especially liked the Decorated Bikes. Yes, I did see the Mary Poppins on the bike. The bikes were fabulously decorated!

Here in Australia, we don't have a Pet's Day. But we do have some other days!

    Cross Country
Cross Country is an annual event here at Leopold Primary School. Only the year levels race against each other and the girls and boys only race against each other.

    Sorry, got to go!

    Your blogging buddy,
    Liv :-)

  4. Dear B4,
I always look forward to reading your Pet's Day post each year! I can't believe how many wonderful activities you fit into one day.

If I was there for Pet's Day I would definitely like to make a cake (That is one of my hobbies). I think my dog Moby would also love coming to school. He loves people and especially kids.

Which parts of Pet's Day were your favourites?

Looking forward to seeing more pictures!

My cat Melvin was sacred when he came to pet’s day.
      This year I took Rock.
Rock is our neighbour’s dog. She teaches the class next door.
My favourite bit was the chocolate wheel.
Rock is deaf in both ears and blind in 1 eye and half in the other.

      bye for now

    2. Dear Mason,
Thank you for your reply. I am sorry to hear that Melvin didn't enjoy Pet's Day, but I am glad that you were able to find another pet to bring along. Rock sounds like he must be quite the old fellow. I have a soft spot for dogs :)

You have made me curious about the chocolate wheel you mentioned being your favourite. What is a chocolate wheel?

      Sincerely,
      Mrs. Watson

    3. Dear Mrs Watson
A chocolate wheel is a round board that can spin around. It has numbers painted on it with a nail between each number. At the top of the wheel is a pointer which points to a number when the wheel stops.
It stands up on a stand. It gets used like a raffle. People buy a number, then the wheel gets spun and if your number gets stopped at you win the prize.

Sometimes we get to spin the wheel at assembly to see how many extra minutes of playtime we get in the next week.

Have you ever seen anything like it?

      warm wishes
      B4
